Samsung Blackjack Tricks

Vertigo recently standardized the Samsung Blackjack. It is wonderful hardware. The smart phone has shrunk to a pocket sized form after all these years. Ironically, it's the software that needs to improve -- the Windows Mobile 5.0 leaves a lot to be desired. It's not very intuitive.

We recently dug through a ton of tricks trying to figure out ways to work in Windows on the Blackjack. Here is a summary of what we found:

  • Reset the phone by holding down UP and POWER.
  • Adjust the brightness of the screen in Settings.
  • Press and hold the Home button to bring up the task manager.
  • Press and hold the jog dial to bring up a list of applications.
  • Press the power button to bring up the quick list.
  • Hold down the message key if you want to turn off the screen’s back light.
  • Press V for PAGE DOWN and T for PAGE UP.
  • Hold down any key to get its alternate character.
  • Apparently the Samsung Blackjack does not support automatic keylock. You have to hold down the "end call" key until it locks the phone.
  • In any of the edit fields, if you hold down Undo it will delete the contents of the field you are in.
  • By holding down the back button on the right hand side of the device, you will launch the camera application.
  • If you want to sync data between your Samsung Blackjack phone and your computer, ActiveSync on Windows XP.

You'll probably want a few applications on your Samsung Blackjack phone. Remember -- this is Windows Mobile 5.0 we are talking about here, so be sure to pick the right version. We recommend starting with a freeware registry editor. There are a lot of great, useful settings that are only exposed through the registry of the phone. Try installing "regedit.Stngr_ARM.CAB" on your Samsung Blackjack – it should work fine for basic registry editing. Once of the first things you will want to do is turn off the "application lock” by editing the registry or by downloading a small registry edit file.

Battery life on the Samsung Blackjack is not that great. This is probably why it comes with an extra battery as well as a standalone battery charger out of the box. Keep in mind that the phone does trickle charge over USB when it is connected. However, you might not be able to get it to charge through USB. The external might be a smart upgrade if you start running into major battery problems. This has been a frequent complaint of Samsung Blackjack users.

The Samsung Blackjack phone actually has a lot in common with the Motorola Q. In fact, often files and tricks for the Q will also work on the Blackjack. You can download new start page designs that work fine from the world wide web.

And do not forget about the fact that the Samsung Blackjack accepts MicroSD cards for additional storage – they are quite small compared to their SD and MiniSD brothers.
